Animal Insights: Discovering the Messages from Our Animal Companions

Understanding and being open to hear the messages from our animals. That when we see the same animal in nature to stop and realize that the universe is talking to you or sending you a message.

As we journey through life, animals often appear as gentle reminders of the profound connection we share with nature and the universe. In creating the Soulful Guidance Oracle 53-card deck, I felt a deep calling to encapsulate these messages, recognizing the invaluable lessons our pets and wildlife impart on us daily.

Why Animal Symbolism Matters

From the time we welcomed our Australian Shepherd, Brodie, into our family, we began to understand the depth of animal companionship. Brodie was a reactive dog, adopted at nine months old. Although he had not experienced physical abuse, he was emotionally neglected, overlooked by his previous family. This awareness deepened our bond with him, prompting us to create an environment where he could thrive, such as a spacious, fenced-in backyard that allowed him the freedom to play and explore without stress.

Animals embody unique qualities that symbolize lessons tailored to our personal journeys. By observing them closely, we can enhance our emotional intelligence and gain clarity during challenging times. For instance, when we notice a particular animal frequently appearing in our lives—be it a raccoon rummaging through the trash or a Stellar Jay calling from a tree—it's essential to pause and consider what they might be communicating.

Messages in Nature

Have you ever spotted a bird while sitting on your deck or going for a walk? Take a moment to acknowledge its presence. Many creatures, like eagles soaring high above or delicate dragonflies flitting about, carry spiritual messages that we often overlook. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds also serve as reminders of the beauty and transience of life. Each of these animals holds symbolic meaning, offering insight into our own lives if we take the time to reflect on their significance.

For example, seeing an eagle might represent strength and the ability to rise above challenges, while dragonflies often symbolize transformation and adaptability.

Reflecting and Journaling

As you contemplate the animals that enter your life, consider keeping a journal for reflection. Document your experiences, thoughts, and emotions related to these encounters. Over time, you may begin to uncover patterns and understand the importance of these animals in your journey. This practice not only fosters self-awareness but also encourages you to trust your intuition and follow what resonates in your heart without overthinking it.

Discovering Your Spirit Animal

We all have a spirit animal—an embodiment of the qualities and strengths we can draw upon in our lives. These animals serve as guides, providing messages that remind us everything is well or awakening us to be more conscious of our thoughts and surroundings. They can offer reassurance during challenging times or encourage us to take notice of our inner world.

To connect with your spirit animal, create a quiet space for reflection and meditation. Ask yourself which animals you feel a strong connection to or that you admire. This practice can unveil not only your spirit animal but also the lessons it brings to your life. Understanding your spirit animal can deepen your sense of self and enhance your personal growth journey.

Embracing Wisdom and Defying the Concept of Retirement

Embrace aging as a gateway to deeper wisdom and fulfillment, discovering new paths and gifts within yourself at every stage.

In recent years, I’ve been reflecting on aging and the societal expectations that come with it. One question keeps arising: why do we need the term “retirement” in our lives? The traditional idea of retiring at 65 seems outdated, especially as we live longer, healthier lives. What was once deemed the “retirement age” should now be a personal choice, free from societal pressure.

This reflection was triggered by a recent conversation with an old neighbor. They asked, “So, when is Marke going to retire?” My immediate response was, “He is not going to retire—he loves his job.” But later, I realized I should have let him answer. My reaction stemmed from my own struggles with embracing my age and the new chapter I began nearly two years ago.

As I approach my 66th birthday, I feel vibrant and full of life. My heart is overflowing with things to share, and I have never felt more connected to my purpose. Since launching Soulful Guidance last March, I’ve created my first Oracle deck and guidebook, along with a 30-day planner and journal. The growth I have experienced in these two years surpasses anything I have felt in the last decade.

This journey has taught me that our later years can be some of the most fulfilling if we allow them to be. It took time for me to embrace who I am at this stage of life. For too long, I felt embarrassed about my age, keeping it hidden. But as my products are now ready for the market, I’ve started shedding that fear. I’m beginning to shine brightly and proudly, realizing that reaching this age is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience.

Interestingly, as I write these blogs, I notice a pattern: they often reflect the Oracle cards I’ve created, almost as if they guide me to share their wisdom in a practical, everyday context. Oracle cards are known for offering insights into the past, present, and future, guiding people to understand their place in life. Yet, many seek these tools for answers outside themselves, hoping to hear what they want rather than what they need to acknowledge.

The truth is, Oracle cards—especially Soulful Guidance Oracle cards—are much more than that. They are a guiding system, helping us become consciously aware of where we are in our lives, what we need to let go of, and what we need to embrace. They show us the path we are already on, highlight our choices, and encourage us to step into our true potential.

As we age, particularly after reaching our mid-50s, life offers a unique opportunity to reinvent ourselves. The roadmap of our lives shifts every decade, and with age, these shifts become more about internal growth than external achievements. We reach a point where we can choose how to spend our time—whether creating something new, engaging in self-care, traveling, or simply enjoying life’s pleasures. For some, this might mean a new career or passion project; for others, it’s about enjoying life on their own terms, pursuing hobbies, spending time with family, or giving back in meaningful ways.

I have come to realize that I am an empath, and the more I give and help others, the more alive I feel. As my birthday approached, my husband and son asked me what I wanted as a gift, and my answer was simple: I wanted to spend time with them, share a meal, and enjoy each other’s company. This realization highlights the gift I have been given—the ability to connect with others and bring light into their lives. Everyone has their unique gift; it’s about tapping into it, recognizing its value, and letting it flourish at the right time.

So, as I continue on this journey, I understand that age is not a limitation but a gateway to deeper wisdom and fulfillment. Soulful Guidance Oracle cards embody this belief, offering guidance that is both practical and profound, encouraging each of us to embrace who we are and the path we are on.

Reflective Question

As you navigate your own journey, what gifts have you discovered within yourself? How might you embrace them more fully at this stage of your life?

Finding Flow and Renewal: Embracing the Journey of Self-Care

After taking the time to reflect, you can embrace the balance of deep introspection, self-care, and creative flow in your life.

After my day at Porteau Cove with my girlfriend, I have had time to reflect on how seamlessly everything unfolded. The experience left a profound impact on me, shifting how I approach my work, my writing, and my connection with others. These last two blogs have shown me the importance of going deeper, not just for myself but for my readers and clients as well.

When I am in the flow, when the time is right for growth and new steps, it is incredible how quickly things can happen in my life. This experience reminded me to take the time to reflect and be aware of how this unfolds in our own lives.

As the evening progressed, I felt an overwhelming surge of energy, my heart wide open, ready to give and let everything pour out of me. Instead of stopping to wonder what the next day would bring, I dove into my courses, life, dreams, and blogging. I felt a powerful drive to help others open their hearts and minds to their potential and growth.

Reflecting on how my emotions and creativity were overflowing, I even felt the urge to burst into tears—tears of joy, excitement, relief, and newfound discovery. I had forgotten how vital it is to honor the time of discovery, to peel back the layers, to give my energy fully, and to truly listen to the messages and whispers that come to me. But I also realized that there comes a point when I need to stop, release, and rest.

It took me a couple of hours to accept this, but once I did, I let go and focused on self-care—resting, nourishing my body, walking in nature, and sitting by the ocean to recharge. I spent quality time with my husband, reminding myself that the relationships we cherish also need our attention and time.

By the second afternoon, I tested myself to see if I was ready to return to blogging and reconnect with Soulful Guidance. The answer came swiftly—no, not yet. I reminded myself that I would know when the time was right, and indeed, that moment came early the next morning. At 5:30 a.m., instead of fighting it or begging for another hour of sleep, I got up and started my day. By 10:00 a.m., I had accomplished what felt like a full day’s worth of work and chores, and then I went back out to reconnect with nature and recharge once again.

I took a moment from writing this blog to sit on our patio, close my eyes, and let the sun's warmth wash over me. The fresh ocean air, the serenity of the moment, all reminded me of the importance of self-care. I indulged in a bath with one of my special bath bombs, called "Blessings," lit a candle, and turned down the lights. I decided against music, craving the peace and quiet to be fully present with my thoughts. These small steps might seem insignificant, but they are essential. We often forget how crucial it is to take care of ourselves, regardless of what we are working on—whether it is a blog, spiritual work, or just everyday life.

As I reflect on this, I realize how much energy goes into mindful, conscious work. It is not a scattered, subconscious effort, but a deliberate, thoughtful process. Sitting in the sun reminded me that sometimes, even a few minutes of stillness can lead to a full day of recharging. This allows me to give more to others, to my next blog, and to my clients, friends, and family.

We are always evolving, changing, and growing. There are always moments of growth, often surprising ourselves with how far we have come when we are open to the possibilities. Writing this blog and taking the time to recharge has sparked the idea for my next blog, a reminder of how being in the flow and allowing stillness can lead to life’s miracles and surprises.

REFLECTIVE QUESTION

Reflect on the moments when you have felt completely in sync with your life, where everything seemed to align effortlessly. How can you create space for more of these moments, allowing both growth and stillness to guide your journey?

Embracing the Fear Within: A Journey of Reconnection and Renewal

Preparing to share my Soulful Guidance Oracle Deck, I embrace both fear and excitement, finding renewal in nature’s embrace.

As the creator of the Soulful Guidance Oracle Deck and Guidebook, I have poured my heart and soul into this project. It has been a journey of deep introspection, creativity, and solitude. But now, as I prepare to share my creation with the world, I find myself grappling with a mix of emotions—excitement and, yes, a touch of fear.

This morning, I am meeting a dear friend I have not seen since spring. She has been a steadfast supporter of my project, and today, we’re heading to our favorite place—Porteau Cove. It is a place that holds a special magic for us, a sanctuary where we can reconnect with nature, the universe, and ourselves. The mountains, the water, the trees, and the fresh, invigorating air all come together to create an atmosphere of peace and renewal.

As I start to get ready, I notice a pit in my stomach—a familiar sensation when something significant is about to happen. But alongside this nervousness, I feel a genuine sense of anticipation and excitement. I realize that I will walk through this feeling, embracing both the fear and the excitement. Just as I mentioned in my last blog post, it is now time to reconnect with spirit. I will turn on some calming and beautiful spiritual music to ground myself and set the tone for the day ahead.

Despite the joy I feel about seeing my friend and the anticipation of using my newly created Soulful Guidance Oracle Deck for a reading with her, there is a lingering nervousness within me. Perhaps it’s because I have spent so much time in isolation, fully immersed in creating something so personal. Or maybe it’s the natural fear that comes with stepping out of that creative cocoon and into the light of sharing your work with others.

I have always been a social person, someone who loves to connect and engage with the world around me. So, why do I feel this fear now? I realize it is not just nervousness; it is also excitement—two sides of the same coin. And I know that spending this day at Porteau Cove, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the companionship of my friend, will help me understand these feelings more deeply.

Being out in Mother Nature, by the water, is the perfect place to do a card reading. The serene environment naturally invites a deeper connection to spirit. We will start with a short meditation to ground ourselves, allowing the tranquil surroundings to center us. I plan to smudge both of us, clearing away any lingering cobwebs of doubt or fear, and creating a clear channel to be guided by the messages that the universe has for us.

One powerful moment I hope to share is the presence of my spirit animal, the eagle. In the past, the eagle has visited me in this sacred place, a symbol of guidance and confirmation that I am on the right path. The eagle’s appearance is always a profound reminder that I am supported by the universe and that my journey is aligned with my true purpose.

As I walk along the shore, breathe in the fresh, crisp air, and listen to the gentle whispers of the universe, I will take the time to be still and listen to the answers that nature provides. There’s a powerful energy in this place, a sense of renewal that I need right now.

Later, during the reading, I know that the cards will not just speak to Kim but also reveal insights for myself. Every time I read for others, I find that the messages often resonate with my own journey as well, reminding me that we are all interconnected and that the universe always finds a way to guide us, even through the voices we use to help others.

The weather is perfect—slightly overcast, warm as we transition into September. It is the kind of day that invites reflection and rebirth, a day to embrace the present moment fully.

This evening, after I return home and have had time to absorb the day’s experiences, I will sit down to reflect further. I sense that today is not just about reconnecting with a friend or enjoying the beauty of Porteau Cove; it’s also about embracing the rebirth of myself as I step into this new chapter of sharing my work with the world.

Love & gratitude,

Finding Joy in Unexpected Places: The Power of Music on Our Journey

Music’s unexpected joy can ignite our spirits, reminding us that life’s journey is about balance, movement, and pure happiness.

As the creator of the Soulful Guidance Oracle Deck, 30-Day Planner, and Journal, my mission has always been to help others navigate their life journeys, uncover their purpose, and craft the best life they can envision. I have often emphasized the importance of spiritual practices—meditation, introspection, and listening to soothing music—to connect with our inner selves. These tools have been invaluable in guiding others and myself towards a deeper understanding of our paths.

But last evening, I was reminded of something equally profound: the power of music to ignite our spirits in unexpected ways.

My husband and I went to see The Pointer Sisters perform—a group I have not listened to in almost 40 years. Their music transported me back in time, but more importantly, it awakened something in me that I had not felt in a while. As they sang, I felt an overwhelming urge to move, to dance, to come alive in a way that was both joyful and liberating.

The Pointer Sisters, once a quartet, now perform with just one of the original sisters, alongside her daughter and granddaughter. Watching them keep the family legacy alive, I realized that music, much like the tools I create, has a unique ability to bring people together and transcend boundaries. It does not matter what spiritual practices you follow, what beliefs you hold—there is a time and place for everything. Music, in particular, can be a powerful force in our lives, helping us connect with our bodies, our souls, and each other in ways that are sometimes unexpected but always beautiful.

This experience made me rethink how we connect with our purpose and our journey. While meditation and introspection are vital, there is also something to be said for the joy of movement, the thrill of a beat that makes your heart sing and your spirit soar. Sometimes, the most profound connections to our purpose come from the simplest pleasures—like dancing to a song that lights up your soul.

I had not anticipated feeling this way after a concert, but it was a powerful reminder that life’s journey is not just about quiet reflection. It is also about embracing moments of pure joy, letting yourself be carried by the rhythm of life, and allowing your spirit to move in ways that bring you happiness.

So, as you walk your own path, remember to make space for these moments of joy. Listen to the music that moves you, dance when your body urges you to, and allow yourself to experience the full spectrum of life’s beauty. This too is a form of spiritual practice, one that is just as vital as the quiet moments of meditation and reflection.

Because, in the end, life is about balance—finding harmony between the stillness within and the vibrant energy that surrounds us.

I will leave you with this thought: What makes your heart sing? What brings you joy? Embrace it, and let it guide you on your journey.

Love & gratitude,

EMBRACING SACRED MOMENTS: MY JOURNEY WITH SMUDGING

EMBRACING SACRED MOMENTS: MY JOURNEY WITH SMUDGING

Smudging—a practice steeped in ancient traditions—often carries a mystique that can seem intimidating or inaccessible. I will be the first to admit, I felt that way too. The idea of smudging my home felt like venturing into unfamiliar territory, surrounded by rituals and ceremonies I was not sure I understood. But as I delved deeper into its intricacies, I embarked on a personal journey with smudging that transformed my perspective.

I came to realize that smudging is not only accessible but also deeply transformative when approached with mindfulness and intention. It goes beyond cleansing physical spaces; it is a sacred ritual that aligns energies, inviting positivity while releasing negativity.

WHAT IS NATIVE AMERICAN SMUDGING?

To fully grasp the concept and perform this sacred ritual yourself, it's important to first take a look at what exactly the practice of smudging entails. By definition, smudging is a ceremony that consists of burning plant herbs and resins in either a clay or shelled bowl while prayers are being done. This results in a smoke cloud formation that is believed to cleanse the air and those within it.

Smudging is the most popular ritual used to clear people and places of negative energy they would rather not surround themselves with. As a whole, smudging is used among many Native peoples within the western hemisphere and has played an active role for centuries.

WHY ARE SMUDGING RITUALS CONDUCTED?

There are several reasons why someone would choose to smudge, but in general, it is to better the lives of people and the places they live. Smudging is the bridge between mortal life and higher realms, bringing in good spirits and eliminating any negative, stagnant ones. This ceremony lifts away any sadness, impurities, and anxieties, and remediates poor health, leaving nothing but peace and harmony for both individuals and the environment after the cleansing.

WHAT ARE THE BEST HERBS TO USE?

Before getting into the act of smudging and learning how it is properly done, let us go over the actual herbs used for smudging so you are fully prepared to either try it yourself or obtain the big picture. For reference, most of the herbs that are used to smudge have antiseptic features, meaning that when burned, they legitimately do purify the air.

  • Sage: Both Salvia Apiana (white sage) and Salvia Officinalis (common sage) are healing herbs used. The term “Salvia” comes from the Latin word “salvare,” which means “to feel healthy and well and healing.” Both white sage and common sage are also used to offer strength, clarity, wisdom, and often represent the maternal lineage of women.

  • Sweetgrass: Known as the hair of Mother Earth, resembling kindness, and widely used by all Native Americans, sweetgrass is believed to carry prayers into the spirit world. The smoke from the herbs is said to take the words and transition them over. It is also known as “holy grass” and when it burns it does not produce an open flame, but a sweetly scented smoke.

PREPARING FOR SMUDGING

Before you smudge, there are a few basic supplies you will need to have on hand:

  • A sage bundle (or smudge stick)

  • An abalone seashell or a bowl of ceramic, clay, or glass to hold the burning sage and ash

  • A smudging feather (optional)

  • A clear intention for the smudging held in your mind and heart

HOW TO SMUDGE YOUR HOME

  1. Clear Your Space: Before smudging your space, I always recommend clearing your space of clutter and opening the doors and windows of your home to let the fresh air in (and the negative energy to leave afterward). Turn off all electronic devices within the space.

  2. Set Your Intention: Prior to beginning, you also want to clear your body, mind, and spirit of any negative or stagnant energy. Start by lighting your smudging bundle or stick. It is important to burn the bundle or stick in its entirety, placing it in a bowl to catch the burnt herbs.

  3. Smudge Yourself First: Breathe deeply and direct the sage smoke around your body from head to toe, front to back, right, and left.

  4. Smudge Your Space: Starting at your front door, slowly walk around the areas of your home, waving the smoke into the air, paying special attention to areas where the energy enters the room (doorways and hallways), and ensuring closet and cabinet doors are open. Smudge each area you would like to cleanse, including corners, closets, under counters, behind curtains, along ceiling lines, laundry room, basement, and garage. Let your intuition guide you. You can also guide the smoke in all four compass directions: the heavens above, the earth below, and within.

  5. Use Positive Affirmations: As you move throughout your home, repeat positive affirmations about what you want to attract into that area of your life. For example, in the Love area of the house, you could say, “This home is now filled with loving relationships.”

  6. Complete the Ritual: After you have cleansed all the areas of your home, cup your hands over the smoke and “wash” your face with it, repeating it all over your body. As you do this, visualize any negative residual energy disappearing entirely.

  7. Return the Ashes to Nature: Finally, end the ritual outside of your front door and leave the sage stick safely outside. Do not reignite until it’s completely extinguished and monitor it for safety.

 SMUDGING ALTERNATIVE FOR CONDO LIVING

For those living in condos or concerned about smoke detectors and neighbors, I have found that using a small gong and walking through each room, performing the same ritual, can be very effective. The sound of the gong helps to shift and clear the energy in a way similar to smudging. It's a wonderful alternative that maintains the sacred intention without the worry of setting off alarms.

REFLECTING ON THE JOURNEY

In the quiet moments that followed, I found myself reflecting on the significance of this practice in my life. While smudging may seem like a simple act, its impact reaches far beyond the physical realm. It is a reminder of the importance of intention, of taking the time to honor the spaces we inhabit and the energy we carry within us.

ANSWERING QUESTIONS

And for those who may wonder—is smudging truly necessary? How often should it be done? I would say yes, it is worth exploring. Whether it is done several times a year or as a weekly ritual, smudging offers a tangible way to cleanse and refresh the energy around us. And if smudging doesn't resonate, there are countless other ways to clear the energy—a reminder that the path to connection is as diverse as the souls who walk it.
